Many of us have heard of catnip, but do you know what it is? Catnip is a perennial herb from the mint family Labiatae. The active ingredient within catnip is called nepetalactone, this is an essential oil which can alter the behaviour of your cat. About half to two thirds of all cats will respond to the oil. A typical response from your cat will include sniffing, drooling, jumping, licking, aggression, and hyperactivity. This "high" will usually last between five and ten minutes.
