Description

What is Trimediazine?

Trimediazine is a prescription-only medicine for horses, which comes in the form of a powder which can be sprinkled onto and mixed with your animal’s feed. It is used to treat certain diseases including, respiratory infections, diseases of the digestive system including enteritis and wounds which have become infected.

Please follow the advice of your veterinary surgeon in terms of dosage instructions. Please ensure that you read the package instructions carefully before administering. Trimediazine should not be used in horses aged under one year of age.

The medication should be given by mixing the powder with a small quantity of feed. Each 50 g sachet provides a daily dose for a 500 kg horse. Depending on what your veterinary surgeon advises, the dosage can be provided daily, or given twice a day, every 12 hours for a duration of five days.

It is advised against treating lactating females with Trimediazine as small amounts of trimethoprim and sulfadiazine will be found in the animal’s milk. There have been no clinical tests on the effect of  Trimediazine on the growth and development of newborn foals, and so if the mother is being treated with trimediazine then the foal should not be fed with the mother’s milk.

How does Trimediazine work?

Trimediazine contains the key active ingredients Sulfadiazine (Sulphadiazine) and Trimethoprim. Sulfadiazine is a bacteriostatic antibiotic which means that it works by preventing the bacteria from producing protein and also reproducing. Thus stopping the spread of disease. The second active ingredient is trimethoprim which is a reductase inhibitor which also hinders the creation of proteins in the cell wall of the bacteria.  The two ingredients when combined increase the potency of the antibacterial action on the infection.

What are the benefits of Trimediazine?

Trimediazine is a bacteriostatic medication meaning that it works by inhibiting the growth of the bacteria rather than killing it. As a broad spectrum antibiotic it can be used in the treatment of a variety of diseases and illnesses.
