Sulfatrim Oral Drops for Rabbits, Pigeons and Bearded Dragons are for the treatment of gastro-intestinal infections prompted by the single cell protozoa coccidian.
For rabbits the dose is 20 to 30mg/ml of TMP+SMZ twice daily or 0.2 to 0.3ml of the solution per kg body weight for a duration of 10 to 14 days.
For pigeons the dose is 25 to 50mg/ml of TMP+SMZ twice daily or 0.2 to 0.5ml of the solution per kg body weight for a duration of 10 to 14 days.
For bearded dragons, the dose is 15 to 20mg/ml of TMP+SMZ once daily or 0.15 to 0.2ml of the solution per kg body weight for a duration of 7 to 14 days. Some literature has advised doses on alternate days after the second dose has been given.
How do Sulfatrim Oral Drops for Rabbits, Pigeons and Bearded Dragons work?
The active ingredient sulfamethoxazole acts as a kind of false substrate in the synthesis of folic acid. Trimethoprim has the effect of inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase. When combined, they have the effect of being synergistic.
