What is Sileo® 0.1mg/ml Oromucosal Gel for Dogs?
Sileo® 0.1mg/ml Oromucosal Gel for Dogs is used to alleviate acute fear and anxiety associated with loud noises suffered by dogs such as thunder, or fireworks around Bonfire Night or other celebrations.
The medicine should be administered to your dog directly on to the lining of the inside of the mouth between the cheek and gum (oral mucosa) at a recommended dose of 125 micrograms/m2. The Sileo oral syringe delivers it in 0.25 ml increments.
Each of these increments is displayed as a single dot on the plunger mechanism. The dosing table indicates the number of dots to be given which corresponds to the dog’s weight. If the dog’s dosage is over 6 dots (or 1.5ml), half of the gel should be administered to one side of the mouth, the other half directly on to the other side.
For dogs weighing 2kg to 5.5kg, the dosage is 1 dot
For dogs weighing 5.6kg to 12kg, the dosage is 2 dots
For dogs weighing 12.1kg to 20kg, the dosage is 3 dots
For dogs weighing 20.1kg to 29kg, the dosage is 4 dots
For dogs weighing 29.1kg to 39kg, the dosage is 5 dots
For dogs weighing 39.1kg to 50kg, the dosage is 6 dots
For dogs weighing 50.1kg to 62.5kg, the dosage is 7 dots
For dogs weighing 62.6kg to 75.5kg, the dosage is 8 dots
For dogs weighing 75.6kg to 89kg, the dosage is 9 dots
For dogs weighing 89.1kg to 100kg, the dosage is 10 dots
It is recommended that the initial dose is given as soon as your dog shows any signs of stress or anxiety, or when the owner hears a possible stimulus themselves, such as the noise of thunder or fireworks which may prompt fear or anxiety in their pet.
Typical signs of fear and anxiety are sporadic or constant trembling, panting, pacing (a change of place frequently or dashing around or being restless) seeking people (clinging, following, hiding behind or pawing), hiding under furniture or in dark rooms, trying to escape, freezing (or an absence of movement), a refusal to eat treats or any food, sudden urination or inappropriate defecation or sometimes salivation.
If the event which prompts fear carries on and the dog shows signs of fear and anxiety again, re-dosing can be done after two hours. The medicine can be dosed up to five times.
How does Sileo® 0.1mg/ml Oromucosal Gel for Dogs work?
The active ingredient is dexmedetomidine which has the effect of binding to alpha-2 adrenoceptors in the locus coeruleus. This inhibits the release of stress hormone and neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which can have the result of limiting anxiety and any associated behaviour.
