What is Relaquine® 35mg/ml Oral gel for Horses

Relaquine® 35mg/ml Oral gel for Horses is used to sedate horses if, for instance, it has acute anxiety or needs to be examined. The active ingredient is acepromazine maleate and it comes in a 10ml or 15ml polyethylene syringe. It is for administering inside the pouch of the horse’s cheek or can be mixed up with food. 

The syringe has a locking ring action which can be adjusted to give the amount needed in line with the dose guidelines. 1.0 ml intervals are marked on the plunger and you can give doses at 0.5 ml intervals too. Sedation lasts for approximately six to seven hours

For moderate sedation, 0.15mg acepromazine is recommended per kg body weight of your horse. 

Use this as a guide: 

For horses weighing 200 kg, the dose is 1ml 

For horses weighing 300 kg, the dose is 1.5ml 

For horses weighing 400 kg, the dose is 1.5ml 

For horses weighing 450 kg, the dose is 2ml 

For horses weighing 500 kg, the dose is 2.5ml 

For horses weighing 600 kg, the dose is 2.5ml 

The dosage can be changed to give between 0.5 and 1.5 times the recommended dose. This all depends on the level of sedation needed. For mild sedation, administer half the recommended dose and, if you need deep sedation, give 1½ times the dose as recommended. Please consult your vet for dosing instructions. 

How does Relaquine® 35mg/ml Oral gel for Horses work?

The active ingredient is acepromazine maleate, which is a phenothiazine derivative that works by decreasing dopamine levels and depresses some portions of the reticular activating system. This action makes it useful for sedating and tranquilising, as well as suppressing travel sickness.
