Description

What is Optimmune 2mg/g Eye Ointment?

Optimmune 2mg/g Eye Ointment is used to treat chronic conjunctivitis caused by autoimmune disease. It is also indicated for the management of Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and Pannus (chronic superficial keratitis). This means that the symptoms are recurrent and usually include a mucus discharge from the eye, along with redness, puffiness and watery eyes.

It’s important to differentiate that this treatment is only suitable for chronic conjunctivitis. It should not be used to attempt to treat bacterial, viral or fungal eye infections. If one of these causes is suspected then a more suitable treatment should be prescribed.

Optimmune 2mg/g Eye Ointment acts directly on the immune system to help your dog produce tears correctly, helping them achieve clear vision and healthy eyes.

Treatment should be as as recommended by your veterinary surgeon

How does Optimmune 2mg/g Eye Ointment work?

The active ingredient in Optimmune 2mg/g Eye Ointment is cyclosporin, which is an immunosuppressive drug. This works by correcting faults with the immune system so in the case of autoimmune diseases that affect the eye, it works locally to correct the production of tears.

This prevents dry eyes and helps the eyes to protect themselves with tears - an important factor in moisture and nourishment.

Instructions for Optimmune 2mg/g Eye Ointment

When you receive the medication, it’s important to read and understand the dosage instructions. The dose of the medicine may depend on your animal and the details of their condition.

The ointment should be applied to the eyes as per the instructions from your vet. It should begin to improve tear production and minimise symptoms within approximately 10 days, but can sometimes take up to 6 weeks to see the maximum benefits.

This medicine should not be used during pregnancy.
