What is NexGard Spectra?

NexGard Spectra for Dogs

Nexgard Spectra is a veterinary POM (Prescription only medicine) used to treat dogs with flea and tick infestations, as well as both demodectic and sarcoptic mange, which are caused by mites. It prevents heartworm, lungworm, and eyeworm diseases, as well as treating and preventing the contraction of gut worms (hookworms, roundworms, and whipworm).

Nexgard Spectra works by disrupting the way that signals are passed between the nerve cells (neurotransmission) of parasites in the dog, it paralyses then kills the parasites.

One of the key active ingredients in NexGard Spectra is Afoxolaner, which is known as an ‘ectoparasiticide’. The product works by killing parasites that live on the skin or fur of animals, such as fleas, ticks and mites. Afoxolaner kills fleas before they reproduce by laying eggs and replicating, helping to keep flea infestations at bay.

The second active ingredient in NexGard Spectra is milbemycin oxime, which acts as an ‘endoparasiticide’ killing parasites like worms that live inside the body of animals.

Nexgard Spectra comes as a chewable tablet, it is available in five different strengths for dogs of different weights. The appropriate dosage is based on the dog’s weight. It can also be used in puppies from eight weeks old.

How does NexGard Spectra for Dogs work?

Nexgard Spectra works by disrupting the way that signals are passed between the nerve cells within the parasites infecting the dog, it paralyses then kills the parasites.

One of the key active ingredients in NexGard Spectra is Afoxolaner. This is an ectoparasiticide, meaning that it kills parasites that live on or in the skin and on the fur of animals, such as fleas, ticks and mites. Afoxolaner kills fleas and ticks by selectively binding to GABA-gated and glutamate-gated chloride channels in the insects’ nerve cell membranes.  It attacks the central nervous system of the parasites, paralysing and then killing them.

The second active ingredient in NexGard Spectra is milbemycin oxime, which acts as an endoparasiticide- killing parasites like worms living within the dog. Insects have a different central nervous system to that of mammals, meaning that this treatment is safe for use in dogs.

What are the benefits of NexGard Spectra for dogs?

NexGard Spectra is an easy to give tasty beef flavoured chew. It is broad-spectrum. It can also be used with puppies from eight weeks of age. It works quickly to kill fleas and ticks within six to eight hours preventing them from laying more eggs.  Because it is not a spot-on treatment, activities such as bathing or swimming will not affect how effective the medication is.

How do I use NexGard Spectra Chewable Tablets for Dogs?
