Description

Hamsters are amazing first pets for many families and children. When they are looked after correctly, they can be a loving addition to the family. Due to hamsters being mainly nocturnal, many owners will use hamster balls to allow them their running around time, without a worry of losing their pet in the night.  The balls are a great idea, but you do need to do some preparation beforehand.

Ensure you have the right size hamster ball

Hamsters are like humans, they come in all different sizes! From big teddy bars to little Russian dwarves. Be sure to know the size your hamster will grow into as an adult and buy the corresponding ball. This is crucial for guaranteeing that your hamster won’t be cramped and will have plenty of space to run around inside, even when they reach adulthood.

A hamster ball is a solo activity

Even if your hamsters are as close as can be, never put two hamsters in one ball together. They may smash into each other and cause injury.

First impressions are key

It’s crucial to introduce your hamster to their new ball and let them explore it on their own terms. Never force anything or lock your hamster inside the ball without them becoming accustomed. A good tip is to place half of your ball inside their hamster cage with a treat inside. This will allow them to get used to the ball and being inside it. Do this for a few days, giving your hamster chance to feel safe and comfortable inside.

Not everyone wants to exercise

Just like with people, sometimes hamsters just aren’t in the mood for exercise. Before placing your hamster in its hamster ball, it is important to ensure that they are ready and awake enough to run around. You must never place a sleeping hamster into its ball, or it could injury itself once the ball begins to roll. Also, it’s important to never place a hamster inside their ball after they’ve just eaten, as the motion may make them queasy and vomit inside their ball.
