What is Drontal Puppy Suspension?
Drontal Puppy Suspension is an effective worming treatment used in puppies, as well as young dogs up to the age of 1. It works to eliminate intestinal worms such as roundworm, whipworm and hookworm. Worm infestations can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, lack of appetite and weight loss.
To quickly and effectively treat roundworm, whipworm and hookworm, Drontal Puppy Suspension is designed to be taken orally and can be fixed with food to allow for easy administration. It’s recommended to use deworming medicine in puppies from the age of 2 weeks, and then should be given every 2 weeks until your dog is 12 weeks old.
There are a number of things that can increase your dog’s risk of contracting worms and puppies are often born with these from their mother. While treating your puppy, you should also consider deworming the mother (provided she is also your pet).
How does Drontal Puppy Suspension work?
The active ingredients in Drontal Puppy Suspension are febantel and pyrantel, which work on a wide variety of worms. The medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream where it travels to the liver. When the substance is metabolised by the liver, it works its way to the worms and stops them from feeding off the food being consumed by your puppy.
Once the worms have been stopped from feeding, they then starve and consequently die. Worms that have been killed are then passed through your pet’s stool, although they may have been destroyed by the digestive system and therefore you might not notice them.
The treatment gets to work quickly and begins killing worms around 2-6 hours after administering the medicine.
Instructions for Drontal Puppy Suspension
When you receive the medication, it’s important to read and understand the dosage instructions. The strength and dose of the medicine will depend on the size of your pet.
The suspension should be given orally, either directly or by mixing it into a small amount of your puppy’s food. The dosage is 1ml of suspension for every 1kg of body weight.
You should begin treatment on your puppy from the age of 2 weeks and should continue to treat them every 2 weeks until they’re weaning or become 12 weeks of age. For deworming adult dogs, you should use an adult treatment.
