What is Cimalgex? 

Cimalgex chewable tablets for dogs is a prescription-only veterinary medication, which is used for the treatment of osteoarthritis in dogs and also prior to soft tissue, or orthopaedic surgery.

It should be taken once daily and the relevant dosage is determined by the weight of your dog. Please follow your vet’s advice.

It contains the key active ingredient cimicoxib, which is a coxib drug, a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine.

Osteoarthritis is a debilitating disease that can require ongoing care and maintenance, it can be diagnosed at any age, usually when the owner notices that their animal is struggling with pain and stiffness.

If being used prior to and following surgery, please follow the advice of your veterinary surgeon for the correct dosage instructions.

Cimalgex must not be used in dogs under 10 weeks of age.

How does Cimalgex work? 

Cimalgex contains the active ingredient cimicoxib. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicinal product belonging to the coxib group, meaning that it inhibits the action of the COX-2 enzyme. This enzyme produces a substance in the body known as a prostaglandin which is a contributing factor in causing pain and inflammation. 

If used prior to surgery it acts by blocking the creation of inflammatory triggers like prostaglandins, this reduces inflammation and therefore reduces pain during surgery. The course of treatment following surgery will be determined by your veterinary surgeon.

COXIB medications generally prevent the creation of prostaglandins that are associated with inflammation, in preference to other prostaglandins.

Cimalgex comes as a palatable tablet, which is available in four different dosages depending on the size of the dog and the condition that is being treated.  It can be used to treat dogs from eight weeks of age.
