Description

What is Cerenia?

Cerenia is a veterinary POM (Prescription only medicine) which is used to prevent vomiting in dogs and also prevent nausea in dogs which are undergoing chemotherapy. It can also be used prior to a journey to prevent vomiting in dogs which suffer from motion sickness.

Cerenia acts by blocking key receptors in the brain which control the vomiting and nausea reflexes. It works by blocking the attachment of a chemical to these receptors and thus prevents nausea and vomiting reflexes in the dog from being switched on.

It contains the key active ingredient maropitant, which is an antiemetic in other words it works to prevent nausea and vomiting.

Cerenia comes in the form of a tablet, which is available in four different dosages depending on the size of the dog and the condition that is being treated.  It can be administered in dogs from eight weeks old.

How does Cerenia work?

Cerenia is a type of antiemetic medication, which means that it works to reduce symptoms of nausea and vomiting and also side effects of nausea and vomiting that are caused by other medications and treatments. These may include types of anaesthesia given during surgery or chemotherapy treatments for cancer. Antiemetic drugs can also be used for nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness, so it can be administered prior to a journey as a preventative measure.

The medication acts by blocking key receptors in the brain, which are known as NK1 receptors, which control the vomiting and nausea reflexes. It works by blocking the attachment of substance P, which is a neurotransmitter, to these receptors and so prevents nausea and vomiting reflexes from being switched on.

Within the dog’s brain, the chemoreceptor trigger zone is an area that receives inputs from medicines ingested by the dog or hormones. It passes on messages to other areas within the dog’s brain to begin the vomiting reflex.

What are the benefits of Cerenia?

Cerenia is easily given to your dog in the shape of a small tablet. Because of the various dosage sizes available it only needs to be given once per day. It is non-drowsy and can be given up to two hours prior to travel for the prevention of motion sickness.
